Bosses in Bloodborne are hard. Some are very hard. Some are grotesque, eldritch, unspeakable assemblies of warped and elongated limbs.
Very few are actually cute. In my opinion, the Celestial Emissary is too cute to be a boss fight, with his big, bubble head and wobbly body. If you can put aside the harrowing origin of how him and his little marshmallowy minions, then they are actually quite endearing. It’s almost a shame I had to ruin the garden.
This boss can go very very smoothly. It’s a real late-game softball if you follow the short and simple guide below. Even if things start to get out of hand, it’s still easy to take charge; you just have to go for a little jog.
Preparation
So you are going to need to make one, slight mental adjustment. Subtle, but it helps. The best mindset in a Soulsborne game is to focus on the enemy and your health bar, whilst occasionally glancing at the big health bar. Staring too much at the bosses help can be a distraction and lead to greediness, but in this case it’s best to watch the boss bar.
The little guys will come running up to you, and the boss will only get big once you’ve struck them. So, pay attention to the first time you see the boss health tick down, and get ready to go psycho on the big guy in hiding.
Not much else really. Just make sure you have your weapon two handed, take papers if you want a bit more damage…
Oh, on my second run I ate a Beast Blood Pellet. That helped to make this fighter even quicker than I thought it was going to be.
Tactics
As mentioned above, the trick to this fight is that the boss looks like all his little mates until he pops and becomes Celestial Emissary proper.
Until he appears, use your weapon of choice like a scythe (especially if it is a scythe) and go to town bopping the bubble boys. Don’t let them surround you and be mindful of their slow winding attacks, but mainly just get stuck in. The more you hurt them, the less they will crowd you, and the quicker you will find the boss. Have fun bopping.
The boss may come up to you quick, or hang back to start. Either way, as soon as you locate the little-big guy, take a pause, let the stamina bar refill. Then go reaping again. Hit, hit, hit until you see him curl up. You can do massive damage to him before he shows his true form.
Once he’s standing, and you’re still near him, he will take really lazy swings at you. If you’re careful with your dodges, and you’ve assaulted him soundly, it won’t take many more swings to bring him down. It’s a short, sharp, scrap of a fight…
Watch Out For
Now, if he doesn’t look like he’s going down quickly after he embiggens, or you’re about to get swarm by minions, back up. From here, things get a touch trickier. At range CE will use magic attacks that hit very hard, and his buddies will continue to chase you off.
So, you need to lead them off. Back away, up out of the garden and back up the steps. Once the little lads have followed you, hop off the edge and run through the garden back to CE. He’s not chasing you with the same gusto, so you’ll easily make yourself some space. If you need to, repeat this process.
Oh, and use the pillars as cover from the ranged stuff.
When he crouches to transform, if you’ve got a decent chunk of health, you can be brutish and let him pop and sacrifice some health for a couple of extra hits. He’ll knock you’ll down, but you’ll have time to recuperate as he stands.
In Other Words
- Go all in on the minions, watching the big bar.
- As soon as the bar drops, go all in on that guy.
- After he pops, stay nearby if you can and continue bopping.
- If you need to flee, choose a nice wide circle to lure minions.
The boss after Celestial Emissary is much meaner. Depending on the route you took, you’ve probably just come from a much meaner fight. So enjoy this one. If you get too reckless, the run back to this spot is a short and sweet one if you’ve opened the front doors, so treat this fight like a stress reliever.
Keep on Hunting!
