Micolash: An Unskilled Guide

Not every Soulsborne boss is a winner. So are straight forward because they are teaching you how to play the game. So bosses have a gimmick that once solved makes the fight feel redundant. In the case of Micolash, we have something tedious.

When a boss beats us into the ground, we have to run back to the battle site from the bonfire/checkpoint. It’s a pain, but we soon figure out the quickest route and it gives us time to mentally prepare for the next round. In the case of Micolash, most of the fight is running around, rather than actually fighting the epitome of a ‘glass cannon’.

Preparation

Not much really. This boss has one quite mean and one very mean move that they will use when you actually get to them. Otherwise you’re leaning on the stick and mashing sprint until you get to where he is.

The main preparation I would advocate for is prepare to be frustrated. At best, you’re going to go round in circles for several minutes before you get to take a swing at Micolash. He has a habit of taking his time getting to where he’s supposed to be, just to annoy you further.

Tactics

There are four stages to this encounter:

  • Run Around 1
  • Fight 1
  • Run Around 2
  • Fight 2

In the first run around, there’s no where in particular to go. Your on a grid. You’ll be running around in circles until Micolash decides to run through an archway to start Fight 1. It’s just a matter of him deciding to make that turn.

It is possible to catch up with him and whack him, and sometimes he’ll get confused and run back towards you for a free hit. It’s not really worth it though; he’ll leave Fight 1 at the same point on his health part regardless. It’s best to just run around and hope he makes up his mind quickly.

Of and ignore the puppet people. They are two slow to hit you and fighting them changes nothing.

Once he takes a turn into the side room, Fight 1 begins, and it’s pretty easy. Honestly. He’s a little NPC pretending to be a boss with only two moves to show for it, and he never really tried the better of the two moves until Fight 2.

Get in close and wait for him to do his big attack. He’ll hold his hand up and forcefully show you some tentacles. Just walk around him. This is true in Fight 2 as well. It has a slow wind down, so if you sidestep and get easy smacks in.

Don’t worry about the skele-puppets. They are slow, so just walk around until you’re on the opposite side of Micolash.

When he’s decided enough of his health bar is gone, he will disappear. Now begins Run Around 2, which starts by going back through the door and through the new archway up the stairs to your right.

This time you have a direction to go in, not just a circuit, but it’s almost as tedious. There’s videos below where I get there eventually, and other guides that describe the exact route, but Micolash isn’t worth the effort. Run past all the minions, keep going until a gate slams in front of you, then keeping climbing up until you come to a drop from above into Micolash’s room.

Fight 2 starts when you drop in. Be at full health when you drop. And if he punches you or gets you with the tentacles, be ready to heal up. This is because he’s going to try and use his Big move now, and its annoying. A big blast of magic missiles in all directions. If your reading this because you’re as unskilled as me, it’s going to hit you and do a lot of damage. Best thing to do is heal through it, and then continue circling him like in Fight 1.

He tended to only use the magic blast if I gave him space, so get up on him and circle round so he either flails or summons tentacles that will miss if you’re strafing. If you’re too far away and you see the blast come, just make sure you’re healed. If you’re next to him, hit him and heal after the blast.

It’s clumsy, but it works. If it doesn’t… its a long run back, but with my lack of skill it was really down to how fast I could ruin his tiny health bar before he used that that blast attack successfully. The rest of the fight is so easy but that blast is unreasonable by comparison. As long as you’ve got enough health that it doesn’t one-shot you, slap away. If you’re cautious with him, I find it just gives him windows to spam the killer attack.

Watch Out For
  • The big white blast
  • The frustration of the long walk back if he blasts you too much
There is a chance he bugs out and doesn’t go inside for ages…
In Other Words
  • This is a very easy boss…
  • …that is just way too drawn out…
  • …and can trip you up with one of his attacks.

If you’re following these in order, you’ll notice I was in a different area with the Celestial Emissary. The boss beyond CE is a tough one, so I left it alone and came to here instead. I would recommend the same, this and the next Nightmare box are easier to tame. In my opinion at least.

Keep on Hunting!
