Moon Presence: An Unskilled Guide

If you’re here, you have come a looong way. You’ve also decided that ‘just finishing’ the game was not enough. You haven’t just chosen to take on Gehrman rather than accept his deal. Now you want a little extra.

Compared to the guide to Gehrman I wrote two weeks prior, this is going to be a short one. I would never be so bold as to do what so many do around FromSoft bosses and declare Moon Presence to be ‘easy’. However, compared to Gehrman, compared to so many other bosses that came before him, you are likely more than prepared for Moon Presence.

If you are having trouble, there’s likely a simple strategy change you can make.

Preparation

Nothing special needed here. Elemental paper of your choice.

Tactics

Moon Presence is doing a lot, most of the time, but it’s quite ineffectual. It’s not like Darkbeast Paarl, where he leaps around so much that you and the camera can struggle to keep track. MP is a bouncy, excitable monster with swishy, slashing attacks that are easy enough to spot. When they jump at you, you can dodge forward or backwards and miss them comfortably. When they slash, nip forward.

I didn’t bother trying to get fully behind MP, because of how they hop around. I would dodge towards them as they slash and whack their side. A lot of the time I’d be behind MP because of how eager they are to hop forwards. By going forward and to your left/their right, you might also notice that their right hand attacks whistle over your head without even having to dodge.

Didn’t take long to figure out MP. A messy slap-fight, but I never felt like I was in danger.

The main benefit of staying close to Moon Presence’s front is that the head is a weak-point. Hit it enough times and you’ll see a fountain of blood and MP will sag. Run up, square up with the head/mask and press attack to do a visceral attack for loads of damage.

Staying at the front risks getting hit by an uppercut, or this slappy charge thing MP likes to do. None of the attacks are going to take you out, and dashing backwards gives you loads of time to heal. It can get messy, but MP doesn’t put on pressure consistently. Sometimes, when you’re behind them, they’ll crawl around to find you and give you ample time to smack their face.

Watch Out For

At some point MP is going to use a eye-blast attack, and all your health falls off. It’ll look like you have no health at all. This seems scary. You might want to run and heal. But attacking also heals you, and MP is going to have a short nap right after the eye thing. So run up and swing at that head freely. You’ll likely fully heal, and those attacks will soften up the head for a visceral very soon.

Second playthrough, first try.
In Other Words
  • Moon will swipe and leap, but a lot of it is easy to dodge or can be soaked up.
  • Move into attacks to hurt their side or head.
  • When the eye goes off, swing even more.

Yay! You’ve completed the main game. Next time, I’m going to start talking about the Chalice boss fights, and then the DLC bosses!

Keep on Hunting!
