Lower Hintertomb Bosses: An Unskilled Guide

Both visits to Hintertomb are largely optional if you’re heading to the Trophy, but there’s useful stuff here, and compare to what’s to come things are a little easier. It’s good practice.

Brainsucker

Preparation

None required really.

Tactics

You should never get arrogant around a Bloodborne boss – ‘easy’ is a dangerous word – but there really isn’t much to say here. The Maneater is going to try and stun you, run at you and eat you. If you put a pillar in between you and them, he stuns the pillar and runs at you. Your two-handed swing beats his range every time.

Watch Out For

Don’t get stunned.

In Other Words
  • Avoid getting stunned.
  • Hit them when they come to you.

Forgotten Madman

Preparation

Other than knowing the arena setup, you’re ready to go.

Tactics

If you just backstep and move to the right a little, throughout this fight you’ll be in the right groove. The middle of the arena allows enough space to orbit Madman. He’s not going to do anything too fancy, so you are just looking for moments when you can cease circling him for a quick hit or two, and then you back away.

Circling him allows you to stay out of tentacles, and staying just a step away from him put most swings out of reach. He’s going to stagger, so you can get a touch greedy, but if you take even one hit of damage it is worth spam-dodging back to get a heal in.

Keep an eye on the second health bars appearance, but don’t worry too much. Just try and be outside of Madman’s range when his friend appears. You want to be able to dodge his entrance and put both of them in front of you. After that, you can continue the same method – go back and sideways until you want to take a swing. You’ll likely hit both of them. Just be at full health when you go in.

Watch Out For

The second guy likes to flamethrower you. It’s not especially painful, but its worth letting it play out before engaging either of them. The main thing is to be comfortable swinging away at both of them until you get nicked, then spam-dodge way and heal. If you’re not at full health, dodge and heal again.

In Other Words
  • Move in a circle.
  • Swing at them at full health.

Pthumerian Elder

Preparation

Have a few papers.

I don’t think summons are necessary.

Tactics

I managed all bosses first time, which means they are manageable, but also means what I say isn’t fully tested. It was messy, but I think I’ve figured out what works.

In the first half, the Elder is just annoying. They like to teleport back but don’t do more than shoot bolts which you can dodge easy as long as you dodge slightly later than you think. So they hurt you most when you chase but then they keep backing up.

So unlike Madman, you’ve got to chase. On the plus side, after most attacks phase one elder takes a tiny pause. So if you take a couple of swings step in and swipe. And then keep hitting. That part’s not normal for bosses, but this guy will either get knocked or teleport away if you’re quick.

Heal if needed, then repeat until they power up.

Watch Out For

Second phase, Elder goes full Troll mode. Extra moves, delayed blasts, attacks without warning and that lance that acts like a homing missile.

Things are going to be messy regardless of what you do. But, you can pick and choose when things get messy. If you are further back, moving around, you can heal and reset. Because they are slow to pursue, and the bolts miss if you’re circling, moving away offers a reprieve. Getting up close is a free-for-all.

But what I can say works, because I started doing it accidentally, is to give them an especially wide berth and charge in when ready. If you stay close and hesitate, they fling flame and scythe. At medium range you’re getting a lance and that awful flame-spike from the earth. At long range you are getting crossbow and that’s it.

So get right far back, get healed, and then start running in. If you get dinged by anything, go back to your wide orbit and restart. If you get to them, swing relentlessly. You’ll stagger and interrupt them a-plenty. Get a few hits in, then leave, and leave until you are back at that wide orbit.

You’ll get hit as you leave, probably. It’s far from perfect, but you are best to try and heal then move. But keep aiming to be far away to heal up to full, and then prepare for another charge.

In Other Words
  • Go after them in phase 1, persue.
  • Go into a wide orbit at phase 2, charge in after they shoot.
  • If you avoid getting hit, hit them a lot.
  • Run back to wide orbit.

Keep on Hunting!
