Show them toilet paper

Part 2a – Show them toilet paper

Seeing that the goblin is in distress, panic in their bulbous eyes, you fumble through your backpack, eyes never leaving the goblin. Your pack contains all the things you think a good adventurer should have. Your fingers close around something soft, something familiar. Then, hand trembling, you offer the figure in front of you, a roll of toilet paper.

You see its uncertainty. They are clearly confused by your actions. You were hoping the mistrust would give way to awe at such a luxury item, but the goblin only stands there, staring at you, with one frizzy eyebrow raised. Still clutching its hand to its chest, it tucks the other, occupied hand behind its back.

Perhaps toilet paper is too strange an object for this simple creature? Or, maybe it is fully aware of this object, and sees your actions as patronising. Worse still, does the goblin think you are making fun of it?

The goblin takes a tentative step backwards, jumping as their footfall snaps an errant twig. You realise you are holding your breath as they take another step. You gesture once more for it to take the roll, but it is clear that this bewildered creature is in no mood for whatever angle you are playing.

Eyes darting to the forest, then back to you, then back to the forest, the goblin makes up its mind. They dash into the forest, continuing to sprint along the route it was travelling before you surprised them.

As it turns, the light pushing through the forest canopy catches on the object concealed in the goblin’s hand. You see it only for an instant, but whatever it is shines as if polished. Some sort of gemstone perhaps?

The goblin moves with haste, but does not move silently, and you can see the undergrowth shifting as it flees. In a few moments it might be gone from sight completely.

So tell me, adventurer:
